Way back then, Slovakia was roughly in the middle of the Ligurians to the west, the Germans to the north, and the Illyrians to the south. Slovenia remained unoccupied until it was colonized by the Roman Empire. It remained a part of the Roman Empire until the Roman emperor, Diocletian, thought that the empire was so fast that it was no longer feasible to rule from the seat of Rome. So he divided the empire in half and the Western Roman Empire got control of Slovenia. The Western Roman Empire did not last long however, as it was soon picked apart by 10 barbarian tribes. The Germanic tribe of the Ostrogoths started a kingdom in former Roman northern Illyria. They conquered the Odoacer who had taken over Italia. There the Ostrogothic kingdom remained until the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as Byzantium, conquered it, Reclaiming Rome. Their control over Italy did not last long however because the Germanic tribe of the Lombards came from the Pannonian plain and began their conquest of Italy and the Norman vikings began an invasion in the south from Sicily up. The Arabs also came and conquered Sicily establishing a temporary Sicilian Sultanate which was defeated. The Lombards had conquered most of northern Italy and Byzantium was forced to withdraw, but the Papacy remained in control in central Italy. One day, the king Otto II of Germany married the princess of Lombardy, uniting Germany and Italy, forming the Holy Roman Empire. However, this empire sold land to smaller-scale princes all over all under the command of the Holy Roman Emperor. Most of Slovenia became a part of the Duchy of Carniola. Carniola was later conquered by Bohemia, and later Austria. Slovenia became a small part of the Habsburg Monharchy. Later, the protestants of Bohemia held a revolution against the Catholic rulership, and the pope deemed it lawful for Austria to go and invade Bohemia. So they did, and Bohemia became a part of Austria. Next, to the east of Austria was the Kingdom of Hungary. The kingdom of Hungary was being conquered by the Ottoman Empire. So Austria made a deal with Hungary that if they joined Austria they would fight the Ottomans together, and the union was formed. Not Austria-Hungary yet however, just Austria. The Ottoman Empire sent their armies for a siege of Vienna, however they failed because the Polish-Lithuanian cavalry came and rescued them from the Ottomans. So, Austria conquered Hungary's old territory from the Ottoman Empire. Later, Prussia and Austria had a war and Prussia suprised everyone by winning. In the treaty Prussia gained Silesia and Wolfsburg. Later, Austria, Prussia, and Russia formed several coalitions against Poland-Lithuania until it was completely partitioned. But what about Slovenia? Slovenia remained a part of Austria for a very long time. Finally, after World War I, Slovenia was given to Yugoslavia. It remained a part of Yugoslavia though World War II and the Cold War, until they had a revolutionary war and gained their independence as the Republic of Slovenia. Slovenia joined NATO and the EU.
