The Early Medieval History of Russia 404

By 1200 BCE, the Slavs settled in modern-day western Russia. By 600 AD, the Uralic Veps and Meryas came to settle north of the Slavs in Russia. By 660 AD, a Slavic tribe called the Bulgars settled to the east of the other Slavs. By 730 AD, the Khazars conquered a portion of southern Russia. By 850 AD, the Vikings were coming to Russia and starting taxing the Veps, Merya, and Slavs. In 862 AD, the Vikings started the Kievan Rus' which over time were ruled by the Slavs who were most of the citizens. The capital was Kiev, however Novgorod was a very influential city. By 980 AD, the Kievan Rus' colonized some land to the southeast. By 1020 AD, the Kievan Rus' colonized Ruthenia and Galicia. In 1025 AD, Mstislav, the brother of the king, captured Kiev, and then conquered land to the east to form the kingdom of Chernigov. In 1037 AD, the Kievan Rus' reconquered Chernigov. In 1038 AD, the Kievan Rus' crushed a siege of Kiev from the Pechenegs and occupied part of their territory, gaining access to the Black Sea. In 1055 AD, the Kievan Rus' collapsed into Novgorod, Vladimir, Polotsk, Smolensk, Chernigov, Ryazan, Volhynia, Kiev, Pereyslavl and Galizia.
